Marie Curie Cancer Care

UK charity Marie Curie selects government-certified encryption service Egress Protect to share sensitive information securely.

Case Study

Marie Curie Cancer CareEvery year, UK charity Marie Curie supports and cares for more than 40,000 terminally ill people and their families, with plans to provide more services to an increased number of individuals in coming years.

This work relies on an extensive network of nurses and trained volunteers treating patients at home and in the nine Marie Curie hospices located across the UK.

The challenge

Marie Curie staff need to communicate quickly and securely with each other, as well as with contacts in the NHS and other approved external third parties. As Egress has been certified by UK Government, users can be confident that the highest levels of data protection are being applied to the information they need to share.

The solution

Offering real-time auditing, as well as date and time restrictions, and the ability to revoke access to secure packages, Egress Protect enables users to remain in control of the information they share. Integrating with a range of email clients, including Microsoft Outlook, Egress removes barriers to information security and simplifies the data sharing process.

“Data protection should never hinder the crucial work of organisations such as Marie Curie. However, with increasing amounts of information being exchanged electronically, data loss prevention is becoming a key consideration for all organisations. By using Egress and enforcing policies at the gateway, Marie Curie are able to extend the level of care they provide to include individuals’ personal data.”

Moreover, installing Egress Gateway, Marie Curie can implement policy at the network boundary. This means that they can enforce encryption on specific messages known to contain sensitive information based on key words or phrases, such as NHS patient numbers. This helps to reduce the burden on staff, freeing them up to concentrate on providing support to those they care for.

Commenting on the announcement, UK Sales Manager Kelly McCann stated: “Data protection should never hinder the crucial work of organisations such as Marie Curie. However, with increasing amounts of information being exchanged electronically, data loss prevention is becoming a key consideration for all organisations. By using Egress and enforcing policies at the gateway, Marie Curie are able to extend the level of care they provide to include individuals’ personal data.”
