The Team

The team’s role within Egress is to deploy and maintain the infrastructure where most, if not all, of Egress Products live. The main purpose is to get product features from code developed by the Development teams and transform it into infrastructure so our customers can ultimately use it while keeping this infrastructure secure and updated.

They play a pivotal role in providing deployment and support for infrastructure hosted in the cloud. This ranges from creating infrastructure diagrams to writing infrastructure as code and deploying pipelines for applications. Additionally, they provide 24/7/365 support managing single servers to huge clusters of servers for a wide range of customers dealing with practically every team in the business to get a customer’s dream out to production.

The SRE team play one of the most vital roles within the company, the developers need a platform to be able to host their applications safely and without the SRE team, that platform wouldn’t exist.

The Role

Reporting Line: Director of Operations

The SRE team is the heart of solving production problems.  As Site Reliability Engineering Manager, you are ultimately responsible for system reliability, operational productivity and reducing time-to-market through the evolution, and technical debt reduction, of services the team support.

This is a balanced role across Transactional and Transformational Leadership elements, and you will be expected to be able to lead from the front, providing your team with stepping in when things get tough and engaging with senior stakeholders.

As part of the SRE/DevOps evolution within the business, you will work alongside the DevOps Lead to contribute to the goal of “Deliver quality applications and services at high velocity” and the mantra “You build it – you run it”.

This role can be based out of either our London or our Sheffield office.

Responsibilities

  • Operational availability. Working closely with Engineering teams to maximize uptime and performance through robust design and delivery standards.
  • Feeding into the process of defining, evolving and tracking SLA, SLO and SLIs.
  • Management and evolution of infrastructure. Including components and configuration.
  • Working alongside the Service Management team to ensure alignment on Change, Problem and Incident management practices.
  • Working alongside the Customer Experience team to deliver the best possible service to our customers. Both internal and external.
  • Getting stuck into technical issues, supporting the team with investigation and escalation.
  • Building, supporting and encouraging a blameless post-mortem culture.
  • Management and refinement of an on-call process for the SRE and Engineering teams.
  • Guiding, coaching, empowering and mentoring team members.
  • Creation, implementation, and maintenance of an SRE Continuous Improvement plan.
  • Reducing waste through a focus on standardization, automation, repeatability, scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Fostering and supporting a DevOps culture within the Tech Organisation.
  • Understanding and implementing objectives for the SRE team.
  • Supporting the delivery of shared Engineering and Tech Org objectives.
  • Continually researching, validating and innovating their approach within the wider industry.

The Person

Requirements

  • Strong transactional management capabilities
  • Strong software engineering or technical operations background (Preferably in Terraform, Powershell, Azure)
  • Collaborative style and natural desire to set up the team for success
  • Pragmatic, methodical and inquisitive approach
  • Ability to identify value priorities, and communicate these decisions to stakeholders
  • Effective communication and relationship-building
  • Demonstrable role/skill equivalency experience

Desirables

  • Interest or knowledge around the area of Security
  • Understanding of frameworks and standards such as ITIL, Agile, Lean, Prince2
  • Additional team management experience such as audit, budget and rota management
