London – May 2014 – Egress Software Technologies, the leading provider of email and file encryption software, today announces the uptake of Egress Switch by a collaboration of local authorities based in Surrey.

In response to continued measures across the Public Sector to improve efficiency and reduce costs, as well as increased pressure to protect sensitive shared information and manage compliance, local authorities throughout the UK are seeking to replace conventional methods of communication, such as post and fax, with secure electronic solutions for email and file transfer. Recognising the benefits of a collaborative approach to service procurement, five local authorities in Surrey have taken advantage of a joint framework to implement the market-leading encryption solution, Egress Switch.

The local authorities that took advantage of the procurement framework include: Elmbridge Borough Council, Epsom and Ewell Borough Council, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, Runnymede Borough Council, and Spelthorne Borough Council.

ICT Partnerships Officer for the Surrey boroughs Stuart Mitchenall explains: “We assessed the common need of local authorities in Surrey to share confidential information securely and cost-effectively. Influenced by the benefits identified by Surrey County Council and Guildford Borough Council, who procured Switch two years previously, we saw the advantages that a joint procurement approach would bring in terms of knowledge sharing, network structure and cost savings. Egress made it easy for us to work together, including providing benefits to two councils that had already purchased Switch.”

“A key part of the compliance process we have to undertake includes robust risk management and the implementation of a solution that not only addresses our current risks but is also flexible to evolving requirements,” Mitchenall continues. “As Switch offers a fully configurable service that can be deployed based upon specific security policies, it helps the Surrey boroughs to remain compliant.”

The first, and currently only, Government CPA Foundation Grade certified email encryption product, Switch is approved for sharing sensitive information up to OFFICIAL and OFFICIAL SENSITIVE across the internet inside and outside UK Government. In addition, Switch enables organisations to comply with data security standards by scanning email content, prompting users to apply encryption measures or automatically encrypting shared information based on an individual organisation’s security policy. Moreover, package restrictions and the ability to revoke access enables users to, if necessary, place limitations on what recipients can do with the information that is shared with them.

Commenting on the announcement, Egress UK Sales Manager Kelly McCann states: “The Surrey borough council joint procurement of Switch represents a really positive example of local authorities working together to obtain a common solution to secure electronic communication. This type of collaborative approach will remain a top priority as councils strive to increase efficiency and cost savings, and as the only UK Government CPA Foundation Grade certified email encryption product, Switch is able to offer the highest levels of information assurance and security currently available on the market.”
