Dropbox confirms users’ account details have been compromised

London – October 2014 – Online collaboration platform Dropbox has acknowledged almost seven million accounts were left vulnerable after credentials were leaked by hackers onto Pastebin.

The initial post threatened that 6.9 million Dropbox accounts have been hacked, including access to individual content such as photos, videos and other files. Although Dropbox has been quick to deny the hack, instead blaming third party services and users duplicating passwords across multiple sites, the net result of compromised account details remains the same. This in turn has implications not only for individual’s personal information but also for the commercially sensitive data that business organisations are allowing to be shared via Dropbox.

Incidents such as these highlight the risk to data security that insecure online collaboration platforms, such as Dropbox, create and should act as a wake-up call for organisations to examine the internal procedures that lead to sensitive information being shared through such mechanisms, often without audit control and user management. Any data breach can have big implications for companies, such as damaged brand and reputation, lost Intellectual Property, or compliance risks with potentially hefty fines. Companies should therefore ensure that they can offer users secure alternatives, with built-in encryption and auditing, so that they can still use Dropbox-like services without compromising data security.

Egress Switch Secure Workspace offers end-to-end secure collaboration by encrypting information at rest, as well as in transit. This cloud-based service provides check-in and check-out functionality, real-time auditing, workflow management, and comprehensive access control. Using Government certified key management, Switch Secure Workspace places data security and real-time control firmly at the heart of information sharing, while at the same time guaranteeing a simple user experience for both sender and recipient.
