The biggest challenge facing public sector organisations today is the ability to collaborate securely outside of Government secure networks. Simply restricting access or preventing the flow of highly sensitive information is not the answer to this complex issue. Only by engaging directly with individuals and businesses that work alongside Local Authorities can we design and implement robust and flexible systems that cater for a range of local needs.
In the U.K, the Code of Connection (CoCo) is a mandatory set of requirements that must be demonstrated before local authorities in England and Wales can connect to the Government Secure Intranet (GSI). CoCo, which has been in effect since September 2009, requires local authorities (LAs) to provide a compliance statement that documents how their information technology (IT) meets baseline requirements.
Egress Switch provides core functionality to assist in becoming CoCo compliant by enforcing encryption of all data that leaves an organisation and ensuring data integrity on any media types. Egress Switch can also classify information by labelling e-mails with protective markings, ensuring that confidential information is not sent to a lower classification network, organisation, or recipient. These core features, coupled with the ability to automatically scan outbound data for sensitive content and enforce policy based rules, enables Local Authorities to share information externally without introducing additional processes for users to follow.
The desire to share information securely is not solely confined to Government entities. A complex network of public and private sector organisations collaborate in order to perform their daily tasks. This often means that highly sensitive information flows across and outside Government during this time. For instance, in child protection cases the Police, PCTs, schools, and courts all exchange information with each other during the investigation.
Technology currently available such as GCmail, CJSM, and partner email systems such as NHSmail or GSI all focus on the same core data exchange mechanism - namely email. While email provides a popular and convenient method to transfer small amounts of information, it is often highly restrictive when sharing large amounts of data. Egress Switch offers complete protection of outbound data regardless of file size or transport mechanism. Secure with ease any confidential information sent by email, burnt to CD/DVD, or uploaded to FTP/Cloud Servers and avoid ‘point solutions’ that fail to deliver unified control.
