Government Collaboration

Sharing Data Across and Outside Government

The biggest challenge facing public and private sector organisations today is the ability to collaborate securely. Simply restricting access or preventing the flow of highly sensitive information is not the answer to this worldwide problem. However, an alarming number of incidents highlighting data loss in the press places increased pressure on organisations to adhere to strict guidelines surrounding personal data.

Data Protection Act 1998 – Seventh Principle

"Appropriate technical and organisational measures shall be taken against unauthorised or unlawful processing of personal data and against accidental loss or destruction of, or damage to, personal data."

Government Collaboration

The desire to share information securely is not solely confined to Government entities. A complex network of public and private sector organisations collaborate in order to perform their daily tasks. This often means that highly sensitive information flows across and outside Government during this time. For instance, in child protection cases the Police, PCTs, schools, and courts all exchange information with each other during the investigation.

Core Government Requirements

  • Integrates with existing email
  • Simple for senders and recipients
  • Handle large file transfers
  • Confirmation of receipt
  • Extendable across Government
  • Ability to install locally or use as a managed service
  • Security that follows the data

Eliminate Risk of Data Loss

The security challenge is clear. Over one third of data breaches are a result of 3rd party mishandling of shared information. Furthermore, this risk and associated responsibility lies with the information owner. Therefore the only logical step is to enable organisations the ability to share information securely - while also offering complete control over who can access the data and what they can do with it. This includes email messages, files burnt to CD or DVD, or even files uploaded to FTP (s) or HTTP(s) Web Servers.

Existing Solutions

Technology currently available such as GCmail, CJSM, and partner email systems such as NHSmail or GSI all focus on the same core data exchange mechanism - namely email. This addresses the majority of information transferred across and outside Government however does not satisfy numerous situations when sharing large files. This can be anything from a 10MB presentation to a 4GB database. To read more about various ways organisations need to share information click here
